New York Yankee Lou Gehrig was nicknamed the Iron Horse for his durability and endurance. Gehrig set a record by playing in 2,130 consecutive games. He retired in 1939 after contracting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a spinal affliction that later became known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. In 1995 his streak of consecutive games played was broken by Cal Ripken, Jr.
