The nationalistic impulses that were an essential part of 19th-century romanticism are evident in the series of Hungarian Rhapsodies for piano written by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt between 1846 and 1886. Liszt presented a highly theatrical interpretation of gypsy music in these works, many of which have orchestral versions.
