French Presidents and Prime Ministers of the Fifth Republic

The Fifth Republic of France was formed in 1958 when General Charles de Gaulle oversaw the drafting of a new constitution. After approving the constitution by vote, the people elected de Gaulle as president. The constitution calls for the direct election of the president, who in turn appoints the prime minister.
