How a Cruise Missile Works

Cruise missiles can be launched from ships, airplanes, trucks, or submarines. A cruise missile can fly long distances—more than 300 km (200 mi)—before accurately striking a target with its warhead. A cruise missile works by using a combination of navigational software downloaded to its onboard computer and an array of Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites that correct the missile's course as it flies.
