| In the Second Ashanti-British War (1873-1874) British forces were led by Sir Garnet Wolseley, a renowned British commander. In January 1874 Wolseley led a punitive expedition against the Ashanti Kingdom that resulted in the destruction of the Ashanti capital of Kumasi and forced the Ashanti to sign a peace treaty. This illustration shows Wolseley, seated in a chair carried by porters, receiving news from the battlefront. |
