Gas Masks from World War I
German soldiers and their dogs wear gas masks. The Germans first used poison gas at the Second Battle of Ypres in 1915 during World War I. Both sides then began using poison gas, which caused blindness, skin blistering, and lung damage. To protect the soldiers, armies issued gas masks.
