Convoy System
During World War I, German submarines sank many Allied ships carrying items such as food, supplies, and weapons. In response, the Allies implemented the convoy system in May 1917. Under that system, merchant ships sailed together and were escorted by warships, which could attack German submarines. Soon after the Allies began using the convoy system, they saw a dramatic decrease in the number of ships they lost.
