| This stone castle in the village of Blarney was built by Cormac Laidhr Macarthy, Lord of Muskerry, who was decended from the ancient Irish kings, the Desmonds of Munster. Set into one of the walls, under the battlement, is a stone slab inscribed with the words “Cormac Macarthy fortis me fieri fecit ad 1446” (Cormac Macarthy built me strongly in 1446). Legend has it that Blarney Castle was once saved from attack by eloquent pleas, and if anyone is brave enough to hang upside down over the battlement and kiss the stone slab, known as the Blarney Stone, the same gift of eloquence will be given to them. |
