| The volcano La Soufrière dominates the northern region of Saint Vincent, the principal island of the Windward Islands nation of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. An active volcano and the tallest mountain in the rugged chain that traverses the island north to south, La Soufrière rises 1,234 m (4,049 ft) above sea level. Damaging eruptions occurred in 1821, 1902, and 1979, and lava from the last one damaged large areas of farmland and forced the evacuation of about 20 percent of the population. |
