Northeastern Iraq

Northeastern Iraq
Mountains in the northeastern section of Iraq reach as high as 3,600 m (11,800 ft). This region is home to many Kurds. A distinct ethnic group with their own language and customs, the Kurds of Iraq have sought independence for decades. Attempts to establish a separate Kurdish state have not succeeded, however, because Iraq is unwilling to relinquish any of its territory, particularly in the oil-rich northeast.
