| Maine is about as large as the other five New England states combined—Aroostook, in northern Maine, covers an area roughly the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island. The state has a population of only 1.32 million, however. Its largest city is Portland, with 63,889 residents. Most of the rest of Maine's population lives in small towns such as Damariscotta, which lies along the southeastern coast. | ||||||
