San Francisco Garter Snake
The familiar garter snake, Thamnophis sirtalis, is one of the most widely distributed of North American reptiles, inhabiting all of southern Canada, most of the contiguous United States outside of the southwestern deserts, and parts of northern Mexico, where it is commonly seen during the day as it hunts for worms and amphibians. Although people that share its range can usually identify the local representatives of this species, they might have difficulty recognizing garter snakes from elsewhere. This very variable snake occurs in a confusing variety of colors and patterns. Many regard the San Francisco garter snake, pictured here, as the most beautiful.
