| This woman and child attend to their yard in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. Linked by several major roadways to the country's borders, Kigali has played a central role in the often tenuous economic well-being of Rwanda. Kigali contains most of the country's industries, and it is almost ten times as large as Ruhengeri or Butare, the next largest cities in Rwanda. Most Rwandans are under 30 years of age and are of Hutu ethnicity. Since the recent civil war in Rwanda quieted, refugees have begun returning en masse from Uganda, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Tanzania, straining the country's scant resources. Although Rwanda is predominantly rural, peacetime population density here is among the highest in Africa. |
