| Saint Sophia Cathedral was built in the 11th century by Prince Yaroslav the Wise, who wanted to give Kyiv (Kiev) the splendor of İstanbul, then known as Constantinople. Saint Sophia was modeled on İstanbul's cathedral of the same name and-with its magnificent mosaics, frescoes, and other elaborate decorations- was the most important religious and cultural center in Kievian Russia. Today Saint Sophia is a museum. |
