| One of a cluster of towering volcanoes in northern Chile near the Bolivian border, Cerro Parinacota stands at 6,330 m (20,767 ft) high. The mountains are part of an Andean massif that lies atop a rift between two continental plates. Many earthquakes, and less frequent volcanic eruptions, occur in this area. A desert spreads across much of northern Chile south of Cerro Parinacota. |
