Fanning out from their moorings, a dozen or more canoes lie temporarily idle in the iridescent green waters of Lake Louise, originally called Emerald Lake. The lake, a popular vacation destination, is famous for its dramatic setting amid snowcapped mountains, with Victoria Glacier in the background and the popular ski resort of Banff nearby. The opulent Château Lake Louise Hotel, built in 1923, grandly presides over one shore of the lake.
