Crossing the Daryā-ye Qondūz

Crossing the Daryā-ye Qondūz
Camels ford the Daryā-ye Qondūz in the rolling plains of northeast Afghanistan. The plains offer vast reserves of natural gas and minerals. The area's fertile soil is farmed intensively, mostly by Tadzhiks, who live in villages that resemble small forts. Before it was heavily damaged during the 1979 Soviet invasion, the northern plains region was one of Afghanistan's most densely populated.
