Strindberg’s To Damascus
Swedish dramatist August Strindberg’s trilogy Till Damaskus (1898-1901; To Damascus) is a sequence of symbolic plays in which a protagonist, the Stranger, leaves his family and embarks on a journey in which he encounters a succession of characters and trials before ultimately entering into a monastery. The title To Damascus alludes to the biblical story of the conversion of Saint Paul on the road to Damascus.
