T. C. Douglas
From 1944 to 1961, T. C. Douglas was premier of Saskatchewan, in a government led by the socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF). During his tenure, the province introduced a public hospital insurance plan that became the foundation for Canada’s national health insurance system. In 1961 he helped to found the New Democratic Party, which replaced the CCF.
