Macke: Woman in a Green Jacket
German artist August Macke was a founding member of the Blaue Reiter group in Munich. Macke created forms out of flat planes of luminous color, without outlines or the illusion of light and shade. Woman in a Green Jacket (1912) exemplifies the joyful quality of his work, in strong contrast to the dark pessism that characterized much of German expressionism. Shapes and colors play off of one another and lead the eye past the figures and on to the stillness of the flat blue plane beyond.
