Space Shuttle Tiles
A technician works on a maneuvering thruster in the nose section of one of NASA’s Space Shuttle orbiters. This view also shows the ceramic tiles that line the nose and underside of the shuttle. These tiles protect the shuttle and its occupants from the high temperatures caused by friction between the shuttle and the Earth’s atmosphere during landing. Each tile is inspected after every mission, and damaged tiles are replaced.
