Krishna with His Maidens

Krishna with His Maidens
Krishna, shown with blue skin, is a human hero who is worshiped as an avatar, or earthly descent of the Hindu god Vishnu. This 17th-century painting, Krishna with His Maidens, is from the book Rasamanjari by Indian writer Bhanudatta. The flattened human figures appear in profile against a solid background. Fragments of iridescent beetle wings have been used in their jewelry.
