American neurologist Stanley B. Prusiner was awarded the 1997 Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine for his discovery of a class of infectious proteins called prions. Prions are implicated in several degenerative brain diseases of mammals, including bovine spongiform encephalopathy, commonly known as mad cow disease.
