In 1947 the archibishop of Canterbury, the highest official in the Church of England, presided over the wedding of Princess Elizabeth (now Elizabeth II, queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) to Prince Philip, who became the Duke of Edinburgh upon their marriage.
