Mining Towns in the American West
Starting with the Gold Rush of 1849, mining developed rapidly in the American West. As gold, silver, copper, and lead mines were established, towns sprung up around them, providing a place for the miners to sleep, eat, and buy supplies. Many of these towns were later abandoned when the mines around them closed.
