Blues singer and guitarist Huddie Ledbetter, better known as Leadbelly, left a lasting mark on American popular music. He acquired his nickname during his stay in the prison farms of Louisiana. His cohorts named him for his stamina in leading work songs in the railyards and cotton fields. Leadbelly’s blues were ironically upbeat and joyful, and his clear, biting tone could be heard for miles around.
