| The Battle of Chickamauga was fought in September 1863 for control of Chattanooga, Tennessee, which was strategically important for both the Union and Confederate armies. The Confederate army won the Battle of Chickamauga, but failed to pursue the Union army as it retreated. The Union army was thus able to regroup and win the Battle of Chattanooga in November, forcing the Confederates to evacuate Tennessee. The Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, shown here, commemorates the Battle of Chickamauga, as well as other Civil War battles in Tennessee. |
