| The Hoover Dam is an arch-gravity dam on the Colorado River. Its reservoir, Lake Mead, lies between the states of Arizona and Nevada. Arch dams curve into the direction of flow of the water to take advantage of the greater strength provided by the top of an arched form. Gravity dams rely on a large mass of concrete for stability. | ||||||
