| Only about 650 mountain gorillas survive in the modern world, with half of these living in the Virunga Mountains of northern Rwanda. American zoologist Dr. Dian Fossey established a fund in 1978 to study mountain gorillas and protect them from poachers. The population of gorillas has been slowly increasing since the mid-1980s and was largely unaffected by Rwanda’s recent civil war. | ||||||
