Mountain Gorillas in Rwanda
Only about 650 mountain gorillas survive in the modern world, with half of these living in the Virunga Mountains of northern Rwanda. American zoologist Dr. Dian Fossey established a fund in 1978 to study mountain gorillas and protect them from poachers. The population of gorillas has been slowly increasing since the mid-1980s and was largely unaffected by Rwanda’s recent civil war.
