Culture Areas of North America
Native Americans adapted to the physical terrain and natural resources in the different regions of North America, and distinctive regional cultures developed. Coastal groups relied mainly on fish and sea mammals for sustenance, while peoples in the interior hunted and foraged wild foods. In areas suited for agriculture, Native Americans farmed and established villages near their fields. Other groups, particularly in the extreme north, lived in small bands as nomadic hunters.
