The Peruvian huayno is one of the principal social dances of the Andean region. Although it was originally a Native American dance rhythm, the Quechua huayno has been adopted by mestizos living in the highlands as their own. Played on string instruments introduced by the Spaniards, such as harp, guitar, and mandolin or on the indigenous charango, the huayno has an upbeat tempo, usually in duple meter with two different melodic phrases of equal length being repeated over and over again. This example explores this distinctive dance rhythm played the on Andean folk harp, mandolin, and a native flute called a quena.
