Claudio Monteverdi’s compositions reflect the transition in religious music from Renaissance to baroque. His Vespers, composed in 1610, is a complicated work in the new baroque stile moderno (small groupings of vocalists and instrumentalists). This work boldly weaves traditional Gregorian chants with contemporary “operatic” elements such as the recitative; aria; and solo, choral, and instrumental combinations. As a result, Monteverdi’s Vespers was revolutionary for its time and is a brilliant example of a “nonliturgical” musical treatment of liturgical text.
