Drum and dance music, an important feature in Ashanti society, is not ordered around a regular pulse as in Western music. Most drum and dance pieces are organized around a series of rhythmic patterns that are each different, but still complementary. Generally the master drum plays changing patterns, usually focusing on the dancer or sending messages to the audience, while other subordinate drums and percussive instruments make up the accompanying mosaic of rhythmic patterns. Instruments featured in this funeral ensemble are a pegged drum, two laced drums, and pots with attached pieces of metal.
