During the Renaissance (15th-16th century) a “rebirth” of artists and intellectuals paralleled a movement to restore the philosophical and artistic ideals of classical antiquity. The spirit of this time is often reflected in its secular songs and consort music. This was also a time when music became more of a part of artistic and literary life. The English playwright William Shakespeare utilized music in the form of popular songs and well-known ballads in his plays. Not surprisingly, his verses inspired numerous composers of songs and dramatic orchestral music.
