The exquisite solo organ and harpsichord works of François Couperin are among the finest of preclassical musical composition. Although a variety of compositions forms were made for clavier (which denotes both the clavichord and harpsichord), one of the most important types during this period was the suite. In France, Couperin’s suites set the norm and were distinguished by their thin texture, stylized popular dance rhythms, such as the courante and gigue, and highly ornamented melodic lines.
