| In pre-Revolutionary America, the newspaper industry helped support the independence movement by printing stories advocating freedom from Britain. On July 26, 1776, the Virginia Gazette published the text of the Declaration of Independence, as shown in this facsimile of that early paper. The Declaration was called “the greatest scoop in history,” according to many newspeople. | ||||||
