Opposition to the United States involvement in Vietnam led to several domestic confrontations between antiwar demonstrators and government troops. National Guard troops stunned the nation when they shot into a crowd of protesters during a 1970 demonstration at Ohio’s Kent State University, killing four students and wounding nine.
