Lyndon Johnson Takes the Oath of Office
A vice president usually has relatively few responsibilities but can be instantly thrust into power if the president dies or becomes unable to serve in office. Here Vice President Lyndon Johnson, with Jacqueline Kennedy at his side, is sworn in as president immediately after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963. He took the oath of office aboard the presidential jet, Air Force One, which also returned Kennedy’s body to Washington, D.C.
