Henry Clay was one of the founders of the Whig political party in the United States in the 1830s. The party was formed to unify opposition to President Andrew Jackson and the Democratic party. In 1844 Clay was nominated for president by the Whigs, but lost the election. During the campaign, Clay refused to take a side on the annexation of Texas and its status as a free state or slavery state and consequently lost the support of the South.
