French Troops in North Africa
The Free French forces were prominent in the North African campaign during World War II. Led by General Philippe Leclerc, they fought against the Axis forces of German General Erwin Rommel. In May 1943, after months of fighting, the Allies forced the final surrender of German and Italian troops in North Africa.
