In the late 1950s rock and roll swept through the United States and Europe, starting a revolution in popular music which continues to the present. Elvis Presley, whose songs fused country and western music with rhythm and blues, was one of the first musicians to achieve widespread popularity with the new music. “Heartbreak Hotel,” recorded in January 1956, was one of Presley’s most successful early songs.
