John Wycliffe

John Wycliffe
The Lollards drew their inspiration from 14th-century English theologian John Wycliffe, pictured here reading from his translation of the Bible to English nobleman John of Gaunt, far right. On the basis of Wycliffe’s teachings, the Lollards advocated a return to the austere simplicity of the primitive Church. They suffered fierce persecution at the hands of English monarchs and many were burned as heretics.
