The University of Virginia at Charlottesville was founded in 1819 by Thomas Jefferson, third president of the United States. An architect as well as a statesman, Jefferson designed the university’s famous neoclassical buildings, including the Rotunda, shown here. Completed in 1826, the Rotunda housed the university’s library for more than a century.
