Buttress Roots
Because rain forest soil is usually poor, tall rain forest trees usually have shallow root systems that do not provide the tree with much support. Instead, rain forest trees are often supported by thick buttress roots. In addition to spreading buttresses, large rain forest trees typically have tall, slender trunks that do not branch until near the crown.
