| The enormous palace known as the Potala is the traditional residence of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of the Tibetan people. The 14th and current Dalai Lama, however, has resided in exile in India since the invasion of Tibet by the Chinese in the 1950s. During the 17th century the 5th Dalai Lama began construction on the palace, located in the southeastern city of Lhasa, Tibet's capital of government and commerce. |
