| Saddam Hussein, president of Iraq from 1979 to 2003, led his country into two major wars by invading Iran in 1980 and Kuwait in 1990. The latter conflict, known as the Persian Gulf War, resulted in Iraq’s defeat by an international coalition. Hussein was overthrown in 2003 by an invasion led by the United States. | ||||||
