Austrian composer Joseph Haydn welcomed the occasion in the late 1700s to compose and conduct 12 symphonies for the sophisticated and cosmopolitan audiences of London. These were dubbed the London Symphonies by Haydn, who poured all his skill and energy into these final symphonies. Brilliant in orchestration and broad in harmonic range and imagination, the compositions anticipated developments to come in the romantic era.
