| Brazilian artist and architect Aleijadinho was the most celebrated sculptor in Latin America before the 20th century. This is one of a series of soapstone prophets he carved between 1800 and 1805 for the Church of Bom Jesus de Matozinhos at Congonhas do Campo, Brazil. The realism and psychological intensity conveyed by the face are characteristic of Aleijadinho'swork. | ||||||
