John Jacob Astor, Fur Merchant
German immigrant John Jacob Astor arrived penniless in the United States at the age of 21. He went on to found the American Fur Company and bought much of the output of the mountain men. Reselling the furs abroad, he built what was then the greatest fortune in America.
