In the 1950s he founded the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), a nonprofit medical research organization dedicated to basic biomedical research and education. Between 1988 and 1997, HHMI funded over $530 million to support science education and research at all levels, from pre-kindergarten to postgraduate school. | ||||||
